This is the definition of terror. In 1978, a PSA Boeing 727 collided with a single-engine Cessna 172 over San Diego. All aboard both airplanes perished.

A nightmare for Airbus Industrie. During a demonstration at a air show, the pilot lost control of this (as I recall) Airbus A319. This type features fly-by-wire flight controls…there is NO mechanical link between the pilot's control stick and the flight controls, just an electrical link. |

The last moments of an American Airlines Douglas DC-10 at Chicago's O'Hare Airport. The airplane's left engine separated from the wing during takeoff and subsequently rolled the aircraft over. This was just one of several accidents to plague the DC-10 in the 1970's. |
